Product Standards

Any product you make for sale in Canada has to meet certain standards to ensure that it's safe and to protect the consumer against faulty construction and misleading sales practices. Your product may therefore have to be nspected by one of the following organizations:

  • Standards Council of Canada. There are standards for everything from very simple products to the most complex. The Standards Council of Canada oversees the National Standards System and accredits the organizations that can develop and test product standards.
  • Health Canada. The Health Protection Branch of Health Canada is responsible for setting the standards and managing the health risk associated with selling, manufacturing and importing foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical equipment. Emphasis is placed on the control of plant facilities, ingredients, formulas, and packaging.
